Hypnotherapy and Reiki FAQs in Salisbury, New Forest and Christchurch

Can I be made to do or say anything I might not want to?

No. There is no mind control involved in any of the therapies used. During hypnotherapy, as with all the other therapies, you are in control at all times and will only act on suggestions that are beneficial to you; anything else will simply be filtered out. You do not have to say or do anything you don’t want to.

Will I be aware of what's going on?

During hypnosis your eyes will be closed, however you will be aware of everything that is going on and what is being said. Many people don’t actually feel ‘hypnotised’, purely relaxed. It is common, however, following a session, to not remember all of what has been said. This in no way affects the efficacy of the therapy.

Can I get stuck in a trance?

No-one has ever been left in a trance state. It is a totally naturally occurring state that we all go in and out of many times a day. Hypnosis involves focused attention which is controlled by you. You are therefore in control the whole time. Some people will find that due to its deeply relaxing effect, they would rather it continue and as such it may take some a minute or so longer to return to the ‘here and now’! You cannot however, be left in a trance.

Are there any negative side-effects?

Quite simply, no! Your unconscious will only take on-board suggestions and changes to your behaviour and thoughts if they are of benefit to you.

What if I find it difficult to relax?

It is my job to help you relax and you will probably find it a lot easier to do so than you might imagine. The way I talk to you, the music I use and the surroundings all enhance the relaxing experience. Having said that, you do not need to be physically or mentally relaxed in order for you to be hypnotised. You can be very alert whilst hypnotised and the therapy still be effective.

Can hypnosis help me recall things from my past?

Hypnosis can help someone recover memories from the past. This can sometimes be helpful to that person in dealing with the issues surrounding them in the present. Recalling repressed memories can be extremely healing; by removing the emotions, the memory no longer has a negative and distorting effect on our emotions, thoughts and behaviours.

Some people may then worry about what memories might come up when delving into the past, particularly if they have experienced trauma of some sort. However, where trauma exists, people know about it even if the memory has been repressed. Hypnotherapy, particularly when combined with EMDR, can be extremely effective in resolving those issues.

Can anyone be hypnotised?

Everyone can be hypnotised if they want to be. Some are easier to hypnotise than others. There are several factors which influence the responsiveness of a client. These include their willingness to be hypnotised, whether they have any fears or misconceptions relating to hypnosis, a belief in it, their ability to relax, the rapport between client and therapist, the ambient surroundings, etc. Once someone has been hypnotised, it is easier in subsequent sessions to enter hypnosis.

I'm slightly anxious about what's involved. What can I do to allay my concerns?

For some people, the thought of doing something new and something they may not know too much about can understandably be of concern. That is why I like to offer a free initial telephone consultation so that you can talk to me about your concerns and anxieties and I can talk through what’s involved, how gentle and easy the therapy is and how it can ultimately benefit you.

Is it like the stage hypnotists I've seen?

No! Stage hypnotism uses particular techniques to induce fast, rapid trances. What I do, is purely therapeutic and everything about the session is very relaxed. Those who participate is stage hypnosis do so because they want to and they do it for purposes of entertainment. The hypnosis I do bears no resemblance to what you see on stage or on TV. It is all about helping you and is done in a professional, relaxed way where you are totally in control at all times.

Will I be ok to drive afterwards?

For a few moments after receiving hypnotherapy you may feel slightly drowsy and have a tendency to yawn. This will quickly pass however and you should then feel calm, re-energized and pleasantly relaxed.

What happens at a session?

Not all sessions will involve hypnotherapy. Some will consist of psychotherapy, counselling, NLP techniques or EMDR and others will incorporate a combination of these.

The length of each session varies but will normally last between 1 and 1½ hours.

At the first appointment, I will initially ask you to complete a Client Registration form (unless you have already received one prior to the appointment), which gives me some basic details about yourself. Then we spend as much time as is necessary to talk about what it is you’d like to achieve from the sessions and the therapies which may be most suitable for you. When you’re ready and feel comfortable with everything we’ve talked about, we can start the therapy itself at this session.

This appointment tends to be longer than subsequent ones owing to the additional background information I need to obtain from you at the start.

There are several different forms of hypnotherapy. At Inspiring Changes, I predominantly use Ericksonian hypnotherapy, which uses a more informal, conversational approach to induce hypnosis. There are no swinging watches or staring into eyes which can sometimes be associated with hypnotherapy! I simply talk to you until your unconscious feels comfortable about entering a deeply relaxed trance state. Therapeutic suggestions and techniques are then used to change the patterns of behaviour, thoughts and feelings, that you no longer wish to have.

Depending on the issue(s) you wish to resolve, a client can expect to need between three and six sessions. However, sometimes just one session is sufficient for effective, permanent change. Similarly, there will be some who require further help and therefore more sessions may be required.

In subsequent sessions we will build on the progress made in previous ones. We will discuss what changes have occurred and how your thoughts, feelings and behaviour has changed in-between appointments. Sometimes new issues may come to light and we can work through those as well to ensure that all issues have been resolved, until no further therapy is required.

You are under no obligation to continue therapy and may of course, terminate treatment at any time.

Should I take advantage of the free consultation?

Absolutely! The free consultation is carried out over the telephone and lasts for approximately 30 minutes if required. I would recommend that you call me initially to talk to me in person. If I am able to talk there and then, we can have a chat which should help you decide whether or not to proceed with therapy, however if there is insufficient time available, we can arrange a mutually agreeable time to discuss things further.

No actual therapy is undertaken during this phone consultation. It is provided as an opportunity for you to talk to me, to find out more about me and the therapies I offer, how and why they work, how I can help you and for you to ask any questions you may have.

If you feel uncomfortable contacting me by phone or it is inconvenient to do so then by all means contact me by email and I will respond as soon as I am able.

How many sessions of hypnotherapy or psychotherapy and counselling are required?

It really depends on the individual and the issues you are aiming to resolve. No two people are alike. You may well notice immediate effects following the first session and therefore for some, one or two sessions may be sufficient. Normally, however, between three and six sessions are required. On occasions up to ten may be necessary and some of my clients like to come for regular monthly sessions once their issues are resolved, purely to benefit from the relaxation and to keep stress levels down!

Can I talk to you in confidence?

I believe that the trust between client and therapist is crucial to the success of the therapeutic process. All information disclosed is treated as confidential, as is any information discussed in reviews. No details are disclosed to any third party without the client’s permission.

If in my opinion, however, a client is either a danger to themselves or others, or where a criminal offence has been or is about to be committed, I reserve the right to inform appropriate agencies. In addition, confidentiality can only be offered within legal boundaries. It is my practice wherever possible to inform the client first should this confidentiality need to be breached.

I keep brief notes regarding the sessions which you are entitled to see at any time if you so wish. All notes and records are kept securely locked away within the terms of the Data Protection Act.

Past Life Regression:

I'm not sure I believe in reincarnation...
Belief in reincarnation is not necessary to achieve positive results with Past Life Regression; all you need is an open mind and a willingness to try.
Could a past life be imagined?
The simple answer is yes, it could be pure fantasy.

There are several reasons, however, why I personally believe Past Life Regression is not fabricated.

The first is that imagination requires effort, conscious effort. Past life regressions are spontaneous, suggesting that the detail is coming from the unconscious part of the brain.

The second is based on the feedback and evidence witnessed during many of the past life regressions that I have facilitated in which the detail, facts and particularly the emotions, leave me in no doubt whatsoever that the client has accessed a previous life.

And finally, my own experience was enough to convince me! I know that what I saw and felt wasn’t purely imagined and as such I am now fascinated me and intrigued as to others previous lives.

Having said all that, recollections can sometimes be as a result of something called cryptomnesia, which is the ability to access information and knowledge that we have gained unconsciously in our current life. There has been a large amount of research carried out in connection with this. It would appear that the nature of the recalled data concerning previous lives, means that the possibility that regressions are based on cryptomesia doesn’t offer a completely satisfactory answer.

Another explanation of what occurs during a Past Life Regression is that clients are tapping into the Akashic Records. In order to accept this idea as a plausible explanation, you need to believe in spiritual matters and if you accept this concept, chances are you’re more likely to believe in reincarnation anyway!

When all is said and done, no-one can say with absolute certainty that the regressions are real. It may well be that there is another unknown mechanism at work. Whatever you believe or whatever the mechanism is, the good news is it doesn’t affect the effectiveness of the therapy involved!

Can I get 'stuck' in a past life?
Very definitely no! We explore past lives through your unconscious mind whilst in hypnosis. In the thousands of years of hypnotism, no-one has ever got stuck or lost. It’s a natural state of mind that we all go in and out of many times a day. It is important though, that you choose to have a past life regression carried out by somebody who is suitably trained and qualified to do so.
Are there any negative side-effects?
Past Life Regression is very safe and effective.

Some people may well experience traumatic events during a session; some can feel scared or cry, however, there is always the option to leave that life and return to a ‘safe’ place if the session becomes too traumatic or uncomfortable. For those of my clients who have had some more unpleasantness in their past life, the resolution that follows has enabled them to deal with this effectively and beneficially.

Occasionally, a session may cause a client to feel confused about an experience if full resolution is not achieved. We would then look to address this further to resolve the confusion until it is cleared, either during the session if time allows, or at a follow-up session where necessary. This is rarely the case and to date I have had no clients requiring further sessions, only those that wish to have more to find out about other lives!

Any temporary discomfort, confusion, mood changes or anxieties, during or after a Past Life Regression session is actually beneficial as your mind processes the experience and relates it to your current life.

What kind of things can we explore in a session?
During a session we can…

– find a past life to explore for interest

– investigate the root of a current physical and/or emotional illness, trauma or phobia

– understand and resolve any current life relationships and challenges

– see how the past choices can have influence over current life patterns and events

– eliminate or reduce any fears around dying

– identify a life you may have lived in any particular country, place or time period that you feel drawn to

– uncover any past life talents and skills

– find someone from your current life that you feel you have known previously

– gain a more spiritual perspective and purpose to your current life path.

How long is a Reiki treatment?

A full Reiki treatment usually takes between 45 minutes and an hour so the client should allow themselves plenty of time. This promotes a deeper level of relaxation and obviously allows additional time for the energy flow to promote healing and wellbeing.

How many sessions are required in Reiki?

It is usually advisable to have a series of four sessions of Reiki taken over a series of days or weeks depending on the nature of the condition or ailment, in order to get the most benefit from the healing energy. This however is not essential and many of my clients come as and when they feel they need a boost. Some have no particular issues they’d like addressing, but have regular sessions purely for relaxation and to feel rejuvenated.

Are there any negative side-effects?

Reiki is simple, natural and safe. It’s even suitable for young babies. No pressure is applied to the body, so everyone can benefit from Reiki. This non-invasive, completely safe healing technique is becoming more and more popular. As Western medicine continues to explore alternative methods of healing, Reiki is beginning to play an important role as an accepted and valued healing practice and is used to complement therapies in hospitals across the world.

Reiki does not hurt. It is a gentle and effective treatment that will bring balance to your physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well-being. Very occasionally, clients may experience, headaches or other ‘de-tox’ type side-effects but this is very rare.

It must be emphasised, however, that Reiki is not a substitute for regular medical or psychological care, but works in conjunction with them to relieve side effects and promote healing.

Does Reiki require belief?

Reiki is not a religion or faith. It does rely on certain spiritual principles and encourages spiritual growth, but religious belief is not necessary to experience this treatment. What is required is a commitment to one’s own healing and self-improvement.

The therapist acts as a facilitator only – ultimately it is up to the client to take responsibility for his/her own healing.

What is the history of Reiki?

The history of Reiki to date has been passed on from teacher to student by word of mouth. The Reiki Sanskrit symbols are thought to be thousands of years old. They were rediscovered in Japan in the mid to late 1800’s by Mikao Usui, a Christian minister. He began an extensive twenty-one-year study of the healing phenomena of history’s greatest spiritual leaders and also studied ancient sutras (Buddhist teachings written in Sanskrit). He discovered ancient sounds and symbols that are linked directly to the human body and nervous system which activate the universal life energy for healing. Usui then underwent a metaphysical experience and became empowered to use these sounds and symbols to heal. He called this form of healing Reiki and taught it throughout Japan until his death in around 1893.

Reiki came to the Western World in 1936 after Hawayo Takata who was born in Hawaii went to Japan for surgery. Whilst there she had daily treatments of Reiki and her condition improved so much that she no longer required surgery. Having been deeply touched by this experience, she stayed in Japan and learned how to practice Reiki before returning home to Hawaii with the Reiki in her hands.

Reiki was introduced to the Western world in the mid-1970s. Today, there are thousands of people all over the world that have been initiated into Reiki, regardless of religious beliefs.
